claire anderson, normal artist
a lifelong artist, I received my BA in Art Theory & Practice from Northwestern University in 2011.
I create using a range of media including but not limited to collage, drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, fiber, embroidery, found object mixed media - I’m interested in following an intuitive sort of logic, both resisting preciousness & imbuing material with value through careful attention & time. my work is often sentimental, sometimes nonrepresentational, both loose & intricately decorated, hopefully playful, with a focus on creating a sense of space through layers, colors, shapes.
my professional experience has been primarily in community-focused independent businesses & project management - specifically independent bookstores & apparel - with my art practice being a mostly separate, invisible thing informing everything else. in 2021 I returned to my hometown in Iowa & have been centering my art making practice at my family’s studio there. my mom has been working in ceramics for over 20 years; while my undergraduate art education did not include clay, I have benefited from being adjacent to her growth in knowledge & experience over that time.
my practice is always evolving & all pieces here are one-of-a-kind originals that can never be truly replicated - however if there’s a custom something or variation on a theme in my aesthetic that you’re interested in, please ask! I would love to help make your art dreams come true.
I am forever grateful to come from a family of many talented creative humans & for the ability to center art in my life.
(my exceptional dog’s name is Normal - she’s the only version of normal I believe in)
